Treating Large Pores

Pores play a key role in maintaining the skin’s health and vitality. Found throughout the skin’s surface, these small perforations, or dots, are the openings for hair follicles. Pores allow sebum–a waxy-like substance that is produced by the sebaceous glands–to reach the skin’s surface. Sebum lubricates, waterproofs, and protects the skin, keeping it supple. The majority of the skin’s pores are tiny and not visible to eye. However, pores can become enlarged and noticeable. A common skin condition, large pores most frequently occur on the forehead and the nose, where the oil-secreting glands tend to be larger.

What causes large pores?

Large pores can be attributed to three main factors: heredity, the quality of the skin, and age. In general:

  • The thicker your skin, the more likely you are to develop large pores.
  • Oily skin also contributes to pore enlargement. The more sebum your skin secrets, the greater the chance that your pores will become clogged with oil and dirt. Such obstruction causes pores to swell and expand.
  • As we age, the our skin becomes less elastic. As a consequence, pores increase in diameter–that once imperceptible hole becomes stretched and visibly magnified. Sun damage that results from years of consistent exposure can also affect the appearance of pores.

What is the solution? If the large pores are linked to oil and debris, proper cleansing can help reduce their conspicuousness. If the skin is generally healthy and balanced, but perhaps aging, large pores can be a difficult-to-treat skin care issue. However, thanks to today’s laser technology and advanced dermatological treatments, it is possible to minimize them. For individuals who would like to reduce the appearance of their pores, New York certified dermatologist Dr. Goldenberg offers two laser treatments that can help shrink pores and improve the texture of the skin.

Fraxel before after

Reducing Large Pores with Fraxel Dual and Clear + Brilliant

The Fraxel Dual laser is a highly effective rejuvenating skin treatment that can address a range of concerns, from hyperpigmentation to acne scars. Fraxel Dual is a non-ablative laser that stimulates collagen production, which revitalizes the skin’s top layer. As collagen is restored and the skin heals, the skin becomes tighter, smoother, and more even–and those bothersome, large pores can shrink.

Clear + Brilliant is a gentle laser treatment that can reduce the appearance of large pores and improve the overall tone and texture of your skin. As an alternative to more aggressive skin resurfacing treatments, Clear + Brilliant is ideal for those who need minimal correction or who are want to even out skin tone, clear up blemishes and combat the signs of aging. Clear + Brilliant can be a gentle, yet powerful complement to your regular skin maintenance and beauty regimen.

To optimize results, Dr. Goldenberg will often use Fraxel and Clear + Brilliant in combination. Your specific treatment plan will depend on the overall condition of your skin and your basic skin type.
