Say Goodbye to Acne Scars with PRP Microneedling

Acne Scar Removal with PRP Microneedling

Although acne is commonly associated with teenagers, it can afflict adult men and women of any age. And, unfortunately, even long after the acne is gone, unsightly and embarrassing acne scars often remain.

Previously, the only treatments for resurfacing acne scars were painful lasers, that came with several days of downtime. But revolutionary PRP Microneedling harnesses the body’s own healing processes to smooth and resurface skin, eliminating acne scars naturally, affordably and without downtime.

Goldenberg Dermatology was one of the first providers in New York, NY to offer this 100% natural, affordable, and highly effective treatment for the reduction of acne scars. In this article board-certified New York dermatologist Dr. Gary Goldenberg discusses how PRP microneedling resurfaces skin and removes acne scars.

What Causes Acne Scars?

Acne occurs when hair follicles become blocked by dirt, dead skin cells, and the oily secretions of the sebaceous glands (sebum).  Bacteria then becomes trapped and starts to grow beneath the surface of the skin, causing ugly pimples. When the inflamed area eventually ruptures, the surrounding skin is damaged, and it can lead to permanent scarring.

These scars are the result of the body’s natural wound healing processes that repair damage to the skin. In normal skin, collagen fibers exist in a random formation that keeps skin supple and flexible. But in scar tissue, the collagen fibers are cross-linked for greater strength and protection in the injured area. Scars develop when this stronger, thicker fibrous tissue replaces the damaged skin cells after an injury.

The type and size of the acne scars that develop will depend largely upon the depth of the original wound, its location, and other variables. Acne scars are sometimes described as “icepick scars,” pitting, rolling, or box scars – because they are typically indented rather than raised.

Initially, acne scars are red or pink in color, but over time they usually become colorless – looking almost white against normal skin pigmentation.

Treating Acne Scars with PRP Microneedling

Unfortunately, acne scars do not typically go away on their own. And, studies have shown what every acne sufferer already knows: acne scars can cause a person to feel self-conscious and less confident about their appearance. In teens, unfortunately, acne scars can even lead to teasing and bullying that can leave a lifetime of emotional scars.

The good news is that 100% natural microneedling with PRP can affordably and effectively reduce and remove acne scarring – with no painful recovery and no downtime.

Microneedling is an affordable, minimally invasive treatment performed in our New York, NY office. Dr. Goldenberg creates tiny but very deep channels in the skin using clinical-grade, ultra-fine needles. The microscopic “wounds” caused by the needle pricks activate the body’s natural healing processes – stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin, which are the building blocks of healthy skin.

And when PRP is used in conjunction with microneedling for acne scars, clinical studies have proven that it leads to more rapid improvement of acne scarring than microneedling alone. Combining PRP with microneedling is sometimes popularly referred to as a “Vampire Facial®” by actors and influencers on social media because of the use of the patient’s blood in the process.

Platelet Rich Plasma (or PRP) is obtained by extracting a very small amount of blood from the patient’s arm, then separating out the solid blood cells from the liquid “plasma” using a centrifuge. The remaining liquid “Platelet Rich Plasma” is extremely high in concentrated levels of the body’s natural repair factors.

The extracted PRP is then delivered deep into the lower layers of the skin (dermis) through the extremely fine and deep micro-channels created by the microneedling. The concentrated growth factors in the PRP help activate the skin’s cellular repair process: old or damaged skin cells are replaced by new, healthy, tissue as the collagen and elastin fibers resurface the skin and fill in acne scars!
