Comparing Facial Fat Grafting to Facial Fillers –
At a certain point in the aging process, it becomes tremendously common for a person to become dissatisfied with their facial appearance due to lines, wrinkles, sunken contours, thinning lips and other signs of getting older. Fortunately, thanks to remarkable advancements in the field of cosmetic dermatology, lines, wrinkles and other telltale signs of aging can now effectively be reverse! At Goldenberg Dermatology in NYC, we proudly provide our patients with both facial fillers, as well as innovative new facial fat grafting, to counteract the visible signs of aging.
Capable both of reducing wrinkles and restoring facial volume, facial fillers and facial fat grafting are both excellent ways of looking healthier and more youthful. In this article, board certified NYC dermatologist Dr. Gary Goldenberg discusses the details and differences of these two incredible anti-aging treatments.
What Is Facial Fat Grafting?
Also known as fat transfer, facial fat grafting is a procedure through which lines and wrinkles can be filled, and volume can be restored to facial features lacking in fullness, using the patient’s own transferred fat cells. Perfect for adding volume to the cheeks, jawline, and area around the eyes, we offer facial fat grafting to our NYC patients as a means of naturally reversing the effects of aging – without surgery and without synthetic facial fillers.
When a person’s face loses volume, the surrounding skin can become loose, not unlike a deflated balloon. Through facial fat grafting, the restoration of volume can be seen as the “re-inflating” of the balloon: increasing smoothness, tightness, and volume.
The Facial Fat Grafting Procedure
The first step of the facial fat grafting procedure involves removing a small amount of fat from the patients’ abdomen or thigh. This is performed either with a syringe, or using the BeautiFill Laser Assisted Liposuction System.
Once the fat has been purified, it is then injected into the patient’s face using a “micro-droplet” technique. This means that only tiny droplets of fat are injected at a time, which results in the smooth and natural appearance for which facial fat grafting has become famous. Many experts believe that fat grafting’s effectiveness is also due to a stem-cell response within the skin that helps stimulate and regenerate the body’s own renewed production of new collagen and elastin.
While achieving one’s specific aesthetic goals may require multiple treatments, the results of facial fat grafting are tremendously long-lasting. Many of our NYC patients are satisfied after a single appointment, and are able to enjoy their results for years to come.
Facial fat grafting can significantly restore volume to any given treatment area with results that last years. The procedure is also completely natural, as it is performed using only the patient’s own existing fat. This means there is no risk of allergic reaction to the procedure, as well as being free of virtually any risks or side effects.
Fat Grafting + Facial Fillers
For our NYC patients who wish to both improve facial volume and address deep wrinkles, we also offer synthetic facial fillers as a solution. These can be used alone, or in conjunction with long-lasting fat grafting fillers.
Facial fillers are comprised of biocompatible substances like hyaluronic acid that, when injected to the face, can resolve a number of cosmetic concerns. Facial fillers are ideal for filling in wrinkles -no matter how deep- as well as improve facial contour and increase volume to the treatment area. Facial fillers can also stimulate the production of collagen, which helps improve the skin’s texture and elasticity.
Results from facial fillers can be either gradual or immediate, depending on the type of filler used. However, since all injectable facial fillers offer only temporary results that typically last a few months to a year, they are not as long lasting as fat grafting. And, while facial fillers come with very few side effects, we remind our NYC patients that (unlike fat grafting) the slight possibility does exist of having an allergic or adverse reaction to synthetic injectable fillers.
Facial fillers can significantly reduce wrinkles and improve volume to the face, especially the cheeks and lips. Unlike facial fat grafting -which requires a day or two of downtime following treatment- facial fillers require no downtime of the patient. And while the results of facial fillers generally only last six months to a year, most patients are able to see results of their treatment immediately.
