Fat Removal: SculpSure vs. CoolSculpting

Goldenberg Dermatology in New York, NY offers patients state-of-the-art, highly effective fat removal and body sculpting treatments. One of our favorite fat loss technologies is non-invasive SculpSure laser “fat melting”. This innovative fat loss technology permanently “melts” unwanted fat from the abdomen, love handles, back, thighs, and even the chin.

Another fat loss procedure called CoolSculpting also kills fat cells – but by freezing rather than by laser heat. In this article we discuss the difference between laser SculpSure fat melting and CoolSculpting fat freezing.

CoolSculpting vs. SculpSure Fat Removal Procedure

During the CoolSculpting procedure a device freezes targeted fat cells through a process known as “cryolipolysis”. In order to accomplish this CoolSculpting pulls, pinches and sucks the treated area of fat between two plates that apply extreme cold to kill the unwanted fat cells.

SculpSure, on the other hand, delivers comfortable laser heat below the skin to heat up fat cells, with no tugging, pulling or sucking of the skin. SculpSure simply lays the device on top of the body – which is infinitely more comfortable.

Also, because SculpSure does not use a suction applicator – and simply lies on top of the skin – it allows for a smooth and natural blending of treated and untreated areas. Additionally, because there is no suction used, there is no chance of nerve or vein damage with SculpSure either.

CoolSculpting vs. SculpSure Fat Removal Time Frame

The SculpSure treatment only takes about 25 minutes – and can treat up to 4 areas at one time. CoolSculpting takes much longer, because it can treat only 1 area at a time, and it takes 50 minutes to do so. As a result, SculpSure also has the ability to achieve optimal results in just a single treatment, while CoolSculpting typically requires multiple sessions to achieve the same results.

CoolSculpting vs. SculpSure Fat Removal Side Effects

Research shows that common side effects of CoolSculpting include pain, stinging, or aching at the treatment site – that can last from a few days to a few week. This is the result of the intense cold temperatures to which the skin is exposed to. Temporary redness, swelling, bruising and skin sensitivity can all result from the cold temperatures, as well.

A very rare but serious side effect of CoolSculpting called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia also occurs in a very small percentage of mostly male patients – in which the fat cells in the treatment site grow larger rather than smaller!

SculpSure laser fat removal, however, does not carry any risk of swelling, bruising, skin sensitivity or adipose hyperplasia. This is because heat rather than freezing is used.
