Everything You Need to Know About Stem Cell Hair Restoration (Pt 1)

Goldenberg Dermatology is one of the first medical offices in NYC and on the east coast to offer state-of-the-art stem cell hair restoration. This minimally invasive procedure is a 100% natural alternative to expensive, painful hair transplant surgery. In this article Dr. Gary Goldenberg explains everything you need to know about this innovative treatment for hair loss.

What exactly is a stem cell?

Stem cells are cells within the body that are “unspecialized” – meaning they haven’t yet developed into a specific type of cell (such as a skin cell, hair follicle cell, etc.).

Stem cells have the unique potential to be able to develop into different types of cells, once they are needed. So the stem cells simply exist within the body, waiting until they are needed to maintain and repair tissues.

In terms of stem cell hair restoration, stem cells are isolated from the patient’s body fat and then injected into the scalp – where they go into action restoring the damaged or dormant hair follicles and regenerating hair growth

Where do hair restoration stem cells come from?

New York, NY dermatologist Gary Goldenberg only uses adult stem cells collected from the patient’s own body.

While adult stem cells exist throughout the entire body, they are the most abundant and the easiest to access in a patient’s abdominal fat.

In our New York, NY medical office, the stem cell hair restoration he process begins with extracting a few ounces of fat from the patient’s abdominal area (“belly”) using a type of “mini” liposuction procedure.

Once the fat is removed from the patient’s mid-section, the stem cells are isolated utilizing a state-of-the-art centrifuge (“spinning down”) process, before being re-injected into the scalp to stimulate hair growth.

What are some other uses of stem cell therapy?

Stem cell therapy has been used in the medical community for over a decade to treat a wide variety of illnesses and injuries. While stem cell therapy is perhaps most widely known for its use in sports medicine, restoring the injured joints of athletes, it is also widely used to treat other conditions, including: Crohn’s Disease, fibromyalgia, macular degeneration and many other illnesses.

Stem cells are also applied to the face and neck as an aesthetic and anti-aging treatment. Using a microneedling technique, stem cells are known to regenerate facial skin for a smoother and more youthful appearance. Stem cell treatments are also used to minimize scarring on the body, such as acne scars, stretch marks and more.

How long does the stem cell hair restoration process take?

The actual “mini” liposuction (fat extraction) process only takes about 20 minutes. Once the doctor has extracted the fat, the patient can relax, sleep, read or check their phone while the stem cells are isolated and prepared.

Once the stem cells have been isolated, the doctor will reintroduce them into the scalp via injection of an intravenous mix of saline and stem cells. This typically takes around an hour, depending upon the number of areas to be treated.

The entire stem cell hair restoration appointment generally takes less than 2 to 3 hours.
