Treating Coronavirus (COVID 19) Hair Loss
Treating Hair Loss from Coronavirus (COVID 19)–
People who were stricken with Coronavirus (COVID 19) and are now recovering are reporting a new, long-term side-effect: hair loss. As if coronavirus infection wasn’t bad enough, many women and men who have survived the virus are now struggling with the morale-deflating problem of their hair falling out.
Hair loss is something with which New York City dermatologist Gary Goldenberg, MD has a great deal of experience. In fact, Dr. Goldenberg was recently interviewed by, and quoted in, Prevention magazine regarding Covid-19 hair loss.
How Coronavirus (COVID 19) Causes Hair Loss
“COVID-19 causes a lot of stress on the system,” explains says Gary Goldenberg, M.D., an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.
“When the body is stressed, it channels blood flow and nutrients away from hair follicles.”
And, as the blood and nutrients stop reaching the hair follicles, they begin to die, and the hair shafts fall out or “shed”. This type of hair loss is medically known as telogen effluvium or “TE”. And TE hair loss can be caused by a variety of illnesses or stresses on the body, not just Coronavirus (COVID 19). Surgery, blood loss, traumatic injury and even pregnancy can also cause telogen effluvium hair loss – as can certain medications including antidepressants.
The average man or woman can up to 100 hairs in a single day under normal circumstances. But, hair loss exceeds that number it is categorized as telogen effluvium, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD).
Prognosis for Coronavirus (COVID 19) Hair Loss
The good news is that telogen effluvium hair loss is typically temporary. But the bad news is that it can take six to nine months or more for hair to grow back to its previous fullness. And, Dr. Goldenberg also says that it’s possible for this type of hair loss to become chronic “with periods of shedding and regrowth.”
And, as with most symptoms and side-effects of Coronavirus (COVID 19) the long-term prognosis for COVID-induced hair loss is still unknown.
Fortunately, at Goldenberg Dermatology in New York City we offer several highly effective treatments for telogen effluvium hair loss – whether caused by COVID 19 or another type of illness, stress or trauma.

The state-of-the-art Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and Stem Cell hair loss treatments we offer our New York City patients are non-surgical, affordable and 100% natural.
These hair loss treatments harness the power of the patient’s own healing mechanisms – including proteins, “growth factors” and stem cells – to increase the hair follicles’ blood supply and stimulate the regrowth of natural hair.
All three of these hair loss treatments have long been used in regenerative medicine, to naturally repair joints and skin. Now this same cutting-edge technology is being used to regenerate hair follicles and restore healthy hair growth.
Each individual’s hair loss is different. So PRP hair restoration may work better for some patients, while Stem Cell or other hair loss therapies may work better for other of our New York City patients. In some cases of hair loss, a combination of multiple treatments may be most effective. And, at Goldenberg Dermatology in New York City we also offer highly effective hair restoration vitamin and nutritional supplements, as well as shampoos, topical medications and lotions that can be used in conjunction with these state-of-the-art hair loss treatments.
