Top Ways to Reverse and Prevent Wrinkles (Hint: Botox Does Both!)
Most of us have heard our grandmother, or a wise old aunt, say: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!” And this is especially true when it comes to lines, wrinkles and other signs of again.
Goldenberg Dermatology on the Upper East Side of Manhattan not only specializes in reversing wrinkles, we also excel at helping our patients prevent wrinkles before they occur. In this article our board certified dermatologists share our 4 top tips for preventing wrinkles – as well as 4 ways ways to treat those stubborn lines and creases that you already have.
And guess what? Amazing Botox (and its counterparts Xeomin, Dysport, and new Jeuveau) does BOTH: reversing existing wrinkles and also preventing new lines from forming!
Top 4 Ways to Prevent Wrinkles
1. Sun Protection
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the largest cause of wrinkles and skin aging. UV rays cause the superficial part of the skin (epidermis) to thin and lose volume and elasticity. Sun exposure can also cause the dermis (middle later of the skin) to develop brown spots and other unwanted pigmentation, and develop dilated blood vessels that cause redness. The deepest layer of the skin (fatty layer) also thins and causes loss of volume, which is usually seen on the face and backs of hands.
Many of these changes can be diminished, delayed and even prevented with the use of broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 and above, in addition to wearing sun protective clothing and hats, and seeking the shade whenever possible. And remember – sunscreen needs to be worn 365 days a year – not just in the summer time. UV rays damage skin year ’round, even on cloudy days, and can also penetrate windows!
Not sure what sunscreen is best? Goldenberg Dermatology offers our own specially formulated brand of sunscreen: “Clear Defense SPF 45”. This mineral based sunscreen is dermatologist developed and tested to provide optimal protection from the sun while being safe and gentle on the skin.
Zinc Oxide, the active ingredient in our sunscreen, blocks both harmful UVA and UVB rays, and is photostable and water-resistant – meaning it won’t break down in the sun or in water. It is oil free, so it won’t clog pores. And because it works by laying on the surface of the skin, there is less potential for irritation, so it’s ideal for sensitive skin.
2. Moisturize
Skin that’s dry and flaky is not only more likely to look aged – it is more likely to age more rapidly. Use of the moisturizer twice daily, with sunscreen in the morning and barrier repair at night, can help add moisture and “missing ingredients” to your skin to decrease the appearance of wrinkles, and to help prevent future wrinkles from forming.
Hyaluronic Acid is naturally present in the skin and can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. When applied topically, it enhances skin hydration by attracting and retaining water molecules, filling in fine lines and wrinkles, and improving overall skin texture. Retinol (Vitamin A) is renowned for its ability to stimulate collagen production and promote cell turnover – diminishing the appearance of wrinkles and sunspots and helping prevent new ones from forming.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps protect the skin from free radical damage caused by UV radiation and environmental pollutants. Additionally, it plays a vital role in collagen synthesis, aiding in the maintenance of skin elasticity and firmness to help prevent premature wrinkles.

3. Lifestyle
Poor lifestyle choices, such as poor diet, smoking tobacco, lack of sleep, or drinking too much alcohol, have also been associated with premature aging and increased wrinkles formation. Adopting healthy habits not only improves wellness, but also helps you stave of wrinkles for several years.
4. Botox, Dysport, Xeomin and Jeuveau
Dynamic wrinkles are those that are caused by muscle movements – such as the “11” lines between the eyes (angry face), horizontal lines on the forehead, and lines around eyes (crows feet) and around the mouth (smile lines). By decreasing muscle movements with Botox (or similar Dysport, Xeomin or Jeuveau) it’s possible to smooth out those lines BEFORE they become permanently “etched” in the face.
Top 4 Ways to Treat Wrinkles
Already have wrinkles and lines? Goldenberg Dermatology has you covered there, too. Once wrinkles become permanent there are basically four ways to decrease their appearance.
1. Botox, Dysport, Xeomin and Jeuveau
Yep! Amazing Botox is on both lists – as a preventative as well as a treatment. Lines related to muscle movements can be relaxed with “neurotoxins” like Botox, Dysport, Xeomin and new Jeuveau – all of which are available at Goldenberg Dermatology in Manhattan.
Botox and other Botulinum injections block certain nerve signals that cause muscles to contract. This temporarily relaxes the facial muscles to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
2. Dermal Fillers
Lines and wrinkles can also be “filled” or volumized with dermal fillers. Facial fillers like popular Juvéderm are injected into the skin to immediately fill in wrinkles & lines, and add volume to sunken or hollow areas. Different filler brands and formulas are ideal for different uses and different area of the face, but they are temporary and are eventually absorbed by the body.
Goldenberg Dermatology offers the widest array of dermal fillers in Manhattan including: Restylane, Juvéderm, Belotero, Radiesse, and Sculptra, to reduce wrinkles, volumize sunken or hollow areas, and reshape facial appearance and contours.
3. Laser & Radiofrequency Treatments
Advanced laser and radiofrequency treatments can be also performed to resurface the skin to decrease appearance of wrinkles and lines. At our Upper East Side Manhattan office, we now offer the revolutionary Cutera V Beam, ExcelV, LaserGenesis, Clear + Brilliant, new AviClear, MixTo Co2, and Fraxel Dual lasers. These laser skincare treatments provide exceptional results minimizing or eliminating the appearance of lines and wrinkles as well as reducing discoloration, rosacea & redness, scars, veins, pigmentation & dark spots, and other signs of aging.
4. Cellular Regeneration Treatments
The board certified dermatologists at Goldenberg Dermatology in Manhattan are pioneers in cellular regeneration treatments. Dr. Goldenberg was among the first in Manhattan to offer both PRP and Stem Cell treatments for skin rejuvenation and the reduction of lines and wrinkles.
As we age, our skin’s ability to produce collagen decreases, leading to the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections (derived from the patients own blood), and advanced Stem Cell technology are ground-breaking regenerative treatments that are natural, versatile and minimally invasive.
